08/25/1836 Bret Harte was born in Albany, New York, to a family of little financial means 1845 father dies 1854 his mother, now a widow, moved him to California. 1857 he found work as a compositor in the office of the San Francisco Golden Era. 1864 Harte obtained an appointment in the branch mint at San Francisco 1865 Outcroppings printed 1868 Harte is editor of newly founded Overland Monthly 1870 Plain Language from Truthful James published 1871 he moved to New York 1877 writes play Ah Sin with Mark Twain 1878 Bret Harte was appointed United States Counsul at Crefeld, Germany 1880 Harte was transferred to Glasgow, Scotland 05/06/1902 He died in Camberely, England from throat cancer |
